Smart Holiday Shopping for Weight Loss

(CARLSBAD, CA) – “Ho, ho ho!” “Tis the season to be jolly!” “Merry Christmas!” And “Would you like a refill on that eggnog?” The phrases of the holidays are joyful, uplifting, and … fattening!

It requires proactive steps to keep from packing on the pounds during the holidays. And one of the most dangerous places during the holiday season is actually the grocery store! The aisles are donned with candy, cookies, and baked goods with the bright colors of red and green that bring back happy childhood memories. Walking right past the goodies may even make you feel like a Scrooge. But, at least you’ll be a Skinny Scrooge if you keep on walking!

Consider these steps for smart shopping this holiday season to keep your weight in check.

  • Smart Parking – That’s right. Start thinking about your health and well-being before you even set foot in the store. Park your car in the spot farthest from the entrance. The walk to and from the store entrance will help you burn a few extra calories. In fact, Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett recommends a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise each day, but those 30 minutes don’t have to be consecutive. So, a five-minute walk to the store’s entrance can give you a head start.
  • Make a List – Never, ever go into a grocery store during the holiday season – or anytime, for that matter – without a list. Take an inventory of your food at home, write a list, and then put the list in your purse, so that you don’t forget it. Once you’re at the grocery store, stay focused on your list, getting one item at a time. You’ll be less likely to toss just anything into your cart.
  • Low-fat Lookout – Beware of foods that are labeled lowfat. Just because something has been reduced in fat doesn’t mean it has fewer calories. One study published in the Journal of Marketing Research shows that we just eat more - up to 50 percent more calories - when foods are labeled lowfat.
  • Check Yourself Out – If possible, use the self-checkout aisle in your supermarket. You’ll avoid picking up a last-second candy bar or soda that are decoratively displayed along the regular checkout aisles.
  • Surf the Net – If you’ve never tried online grocery shopping, the holiday season just may be the time to try. When you’re sitting in front of your computer, you’re less tempted by high-calorie foods staring you in the face. You’ll be able to pick-out healthier foods, add them into your cart, and have them delivered right to your doorstep!
