Vitamins – What’s Hot & What’s Not?

(CARLSBAD, CA) – A trip down the vitamin aisle of your local drugstore may put your head into a tailspin. How do you know what you really need? Which vitamins are essential for optimal health? And which ones are a waste of money?

Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett offers a few insights into the world of vitamins with these general tips:

  • Take a multi-vitamin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a daily multi-vitamin, especially for women, because 90 percent of us don’t meet vitamin and mineral requirements through diet alone.

  • Take the right multi-vitamin. Not all multi-vitamins are created equal. Check the label of your multi-vitamin to make sure that it has at least 600 IUs of Vitamin D. Also, choose a multi-vitamin that has a minimum of 18mg of iron. Many brands of multi-vitamins will neglect iron, yet 10 percent of women are iron-deficient. Iron is particularly important if you plan to exercise because it helps prevent fatigue during tough workouts.

  • Add some calcium. Your body can only absorb calcium in moderate doses. So, even if your multi-vitamin promises that it contains a full daily allowance, your body will not absorb the entire amount. Choose a calcium supplement that’s around 200-400mg. Take one in the morning and another in the evening. Combine your calcium with magnesium and Vitamin D (some calcium supplements include these other components), which will help your body to absorb the calcium.

  • Look for USP on the label. This label ensures that a product meets standards set by the testing organization US Pharmacopoeia. The renowned Mayo Clinic recommends only using supplements with the USP label.

  • Check the expiration date. Yes, vitamins can expire, especially in hot or humid climates. Store your bottles in a cool, dry area.

  • Avoid megadoses. Look for a multi-vitamin that includes 100 percent of the daily value of most vitamins. But, avoid those brands that advertise amounts in excess of 200 percent of the daily value. You’re just wasting your money for something that you don’t need.

  • Talk to your doctor. Anytime that you add a supplement to your daily regimen, you need to notify your doctor. The vitamin may interfere with some of your prescription medications or create an adverse reaction. Tell your doctor about everything you ingest into your body, even if you think it’s unimportant. Your doctor can help you fine-tune your daily intake of vitamins to achieve the best results.
