Her hugs last even after she lets go. She’s always good for a pep talk, a meal, the truth and advice—lots of advice. Even if your relationship is more oil and water than peas and carrots, she’s the one who sees the best in you and wants the most for you. Who is this loving superhero? It’s Mom—whoever that figure is in your life—and this month it’s her turn to be taken care of.
To honor Moms this Mother’s Day, we ran a Tote-ally Amazing Mom contest. We asked you to nominate and vote for the most deserving mother. Congratulations to Sonia, our winner, who was nominated by her daughter, Rosa! While not everyone could win, we’ve loved reading the many, many inspirational stories. Here are a few that touched us.
By popular vote, here’s the contest winning essay written by Rosa about her Mom, Sonia:
From Rosa, for Sonia
It would be amazing if my mom could win this contest because she is the most amazing woman. I look up to her and can only hope to one day be as strong of a person. She was forced to leave everything behind in Peru in pursuit of a better life for my sisters and I. She left her family, friends, career, and the country that she called home. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for her to have been uprooted and placed in an unknown country where she didn’t really know anyone and didn’t even speak the language. Along with my dad, my mom has worked hard to try and provide my sisters and I, a good life. Even though things were tough in the beginning, things got better once my mom started her small business in Maine. Because of all of her hard work, my family was able to put me through school to get my BS and MS. And now she’s working hard again as she puts my younger sister through school too. However, the most important thing that my mom does is simply being the one person that my sisters and I can always confide in. From school, to dating, there is not one topic that I would feel uncomfortable sharing with my mom. I can always count on her to be open and give great advice. All of these things combined make my mom an amazing woman and my best friend.
Here are a few other nominations that won our hearts…
From Kristen, for Julie
I am nominating my mother, Julie, because she is the most inspirational, caring, and supportive woman I know. My mom has been Jazzercising since the ‘90s and she invited me to try a class with her on Mother’s Day four years ago. As a confident and self-assured college student, I assumed the class was going to be a piece of cake (ha!). Much to my surprise, the class was challenging and I was sweating buckets by the end. I was (and still am) inspired by my mom’s dedication to attending Jazzercise. Not only is she a mother of two, a wife, and a full time Dietitian at a hospital, but she also makes time to attend Jazzercise at least 2-3 times each week. She inspired me to join Jazzercise and supported my exercise and eating habits, which helped me lose ~30lbs. I love attending class with my mom and look forward to when I come home and get to Jazzercise with her by my side. I am only 23 years old, but I can honestly say I have never felt better and I owe that to my mother! Thank you, Mom, for being such an inspiration. I love you!
From Michelle, for Bette
My mother is so amazing she actually nominated ME for the contest! I wouldn't know the first thing about being an amazing mom if I didn't have her as an example! She has been there for her 3 children through everything. She always puts everyone else first and would do anything for anyone. With 6 grandBOYS she always finds a way to be at every single game. She has a huge heart and I am so proud to say that she is my mom!! I love you so much mom!!
From Meg, for Peg
I'd like to nominate my mom because she is the most hardworking, selfless, caring woman I've ever known. I'm the youngest of 5 kids, and was in babysitting at Jazzercise 20 years ago before I even knew what it was. My mom has dedicated her life to raising her children-her kids might know how amazing she is, but she is never recognized for the beautiful work she has been doing for over 30 years. There is no employee of the month or yearly raise for being a stay at home mom. My mom just hit 20 years of going to Jazzercise this February, and I joined with her just under a year ago and we have been able to connect on a new level taking class together. Coming to Jazzercise is the one hour a day that is strictly for her. We are now days away from my mom becoming a grandmother for the fourth time - and I'm able to watch my older siblings model the parenting styles that they have learned from the same passionate woman. Please help me reward someone who is thirty years overdue in being recognized, the woman who has given her life to raising her Fabulous Five!
