Eat Your Way to Healthier Hair

We are what we eat and that applies to our hair, too. Hair products help, of course, but nutritionists and beauty experts tell us that healthy hair begins from the inside out.

Building blocks for great tresses include protein, Omega-3 fats, iron, biotin and foods that contain Vitamins A and C that help our bodies produce sebum, our natural hair conditioner.

Exercising is also key. Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett reminds us that consistent physical movement promotes better circulation and increased blood flow which aids hair growth.

 

Here are some things you can eat for healthier hair:

  • Swimmin’ Salmon – Salmon provides us with Omega-3 fats that help our scalps contain enough moisture to provide us with lustrous hair. A three-ounce serving of salmon also gives us one-third of our daily protein requirement. Not a fish lover? Take one tablespoon daily of ground flaxseed.
  • Eat Your Vegetables – The darker and leafier the better to get Vitamins A and C that help our hair follicles produce sebum, a natural substance that keeps our scalp and hair from drying out. Also, iron has been shown to help hair grow so gravitate toward veggies with high iron content including spinach, broccoli, kale and chard.
  • Lean Beans – Beans of all types are lean sources of protein, one of the most essential building blocks for healthy hair. You can also find protein in beef, chicken, fish and pork.
  • Get Nuts - Nuts contain elements that are good for your hair as well as your scalp. Almonds, cashews and pecans contain biotin that has been associated with aiding hair growth. Nuts also pack a healthy protein punch to help keep our locks luscious.
  • Diet Naturally - While watching your weight, be sure to eat as many calories from natural foods as possible to assure that you are taking in enough nutrients for healthy hair – and a healthy body. Avoid heavily processed or fast foods as they provide little nutritional support.
  • Sparkling Attitude – OK, so it’s not a food but our attitude has a tremendous affect on our bodies, including our hair. Manage your mind by counterbalancing stressful times with a walk in a park, meditation, and quality time with family and friends. Have a few moments of time to yourself? Treat yourself to a scalp massage. You’ll awaken your hair follicles and relax your mind.
